NDSU BISON

Hey! šŸ˜Š So, let me tell you a story about a truly remarkable man who’s just decided to hang up his coaching whistle after an incredible 45-year career in college football. His name is Randy Hedberg, and he recently announced his retirement as the associate head coach at North Dakota State University. Can you believe that? After so many years! šŸŽ‰

Now, Randy’s been a big deal at NDSU, especially as the quarterbacks coach since 2014. During his time there, he was part of a dynasty, helping the Bison snag eight Missouri Valley Football Conference championships and seven national titles in the NCAA Division I FCS. Talk about a rĆ©sumĆ©! šŸ† He said it himself: ā€œI have been fortunate to have coached for the last 11 seasons at NDSU with three different head coaches. Being a North Dakota native, it is extremely gratifying to be ending my college coaching career at NDSU.ā€ Itā€™s clear how much this place meant to him.

And you know whatā€™s really cool? He didnā€™t just coach any average players. Nope! He mentored some future pros, including three NFL draft picks, one of whom was Trey Lance. This kid was a superstar! In 2019, he took home the Walter Payton Award and set an NCAA record for passing without an interception in a season. Ultimately, he was drafted third overall by the San Francisco 49ers. Imagine the pride Randy must feel seeing his players succeed at that level! šŸŒŸ

But wait, thereā€™s more! Think about Easton Stickā€”another student of Randy’sā€”who became the FCS all-time winningest quarterback. He led NDSU to multiple championships and set records that are still talked about today. Then you have Carson Wentz, drafted second overall by the Eagles and leading his team to a Super Bowl victory. Itā€™s like Randy had the Midas touch! šŸˆāœØ

What I find particularly heartwarming is how he expresses gratitude, saying, ā€œThank you to the NDSU administration, fellow coaches, Bison Nation, and especially the players for this tremendous time of my coaching life.ā€ Itā€™s rare to find someone who truly values their relationships like that. And letā€™s not forget about his family supportā€”his wife, Dr. Chery Hysjulien, and their four kids and eight grandkids. Theyā€™ve been by his side through it all. ā¤ļø

Randy’s journey started way back when he was an eighth-round draft pick by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 1977. He played for several teams, including the Raiders and Packers. Plus, he has a rich history as a player at Minot State, where he made a name for himselfā€”itā€™s no wonder they named the football field after him!

As we bid farewell to Randy Hedberg, itā€™s nice to look back at the legacy he leaves behindā€”a legacy built on hard work, passion, and a genuine love for the game. So, hereā€™s to retirementā€”may he enjoy those grandkids and all the adventures that await!
