NCAA Posts Historic Sarah Strong News After UConn Championship
Sarah Strong made women’s college basketball history following the UConn Huskies’ national championship win.
The UConn freshman was sensational on Sunday, as she helped power the Huskies to a 82-59 win over the South Carolina Gamecocks with a 24-point and 15-rebound performance.
With that, Strong set the record for the most points scored by a freshman in a single NCAA Tournament. The Huskies star tallied an impressive 114 points over the course of the competition, surpassing the previous record (111 points) held by former Tennessee Lady Volunteers star Tamika Catchings.
The NCAA announced the historic news in the aftermath of UConn’s title win, writing, “Sarah’s Stats are Strong.” It also included an edited photo highlighting Strong’s accomplishment.

Sarah Strong averaged 19.0 points throughout six games in the tournament against the Arkansas State Red Wolves, South Dakota State Jackrabbits, Oklahoma Sooners, USC Trojans, UCLA Bruins and the Gamecocks.
Her strongest showing was, of course, in the championship showdown against the Gamecocks. However, she did score 22 points in back-to-back games in the Elite Eight (vs. Trojans) and Final Four (vs. Bruins).
Strong’s performance is certainly one for the ages, as she became instrumental in UConn securing its first title since 2016. It also highlighted the freshman’s ascendance into the world of college basketball as one of its brightest stars in the years to come.
