Justin Gainey is “flattered” at the thought of being a candidate for the NC State coaching vacancy, but insisted his focus rests with Tennessee basketball as the Vols head into the postseason.
“The fact that I am even mentioned, I am flattered,” the Vols associate head coach said when asked about the opening Thursday. “That is big and in large part (a credit) to what we have done here. I credit the guys I have had the opportunity to coach here and I credit coach (Rick) Barnes for giving me this opportunity to have me even mentioned in such a great situation like that.”
NC State fired coach Kevin Keatts was fired after eight seasons Sunday. He took the Wolfpack to the Final Four in 2024. Gainey was surprised by Keatts’ firing, he said, before adding he has long kept his eye on NC State because of his deep ties to the school.
Gainey played for the Wolfpack from 1996-2000 and was on staff at NC State from 2006-09. Gainey, 47, has been on staff at Tennessee for four seasons. Next season will be his 20th in college basketball coaching.

“As far as me and my involvement on everything, I am focused on what we are doing here,” Gainey said. “Trying to win an SEC championship. Trying to win an NCAA Tournament.”
