NC general manager Michael Lombardi conveyed a key message during ‘The Pat McAfee Show’
Bill Belichick, an eight-time Super Bowl champion and iconic NFL coach, has never held a position in college football.
This past offseason, he was brought on by North Carolina to succeed former head coach Mack Brown, and now Tar Heels football has become one of the most compelling stories of the 2025 college football season.
That’s why the producers of HBO’s “Hard Knocks” expressed interest in showcasing UNC as the new season approaches.
However, the Tar Heels ultimately declined the opportunity, and NC general manager Michael Lombardi recently shared the reasoning behind the decision on “The Pat McAfee Show.”
“It would have been fantastic, but the issue is that we want to control the narrative we need to express here. And the narrative we want to convey doesn’t conclude after our game against TCU,” Lombardi explained (h/t On3). “We want to share a story about how we’re rebuilding this program, honoring the great players who came before us, and revitalizing Tar Heel football to make this stadium lively on Saturday afternoons like many other schools in the ACC. That’s the story we aim to tell.
"We control the story that we need to tell here and the story that we wanna tell doesn't end after we play TCU..
The story that we wanna tell is about rebuilding this program" ~ @mlombardiuncgm #PMSLive https://t.co/pnsXC8WqFG pic.twitter.com/m75vQUH4NP

Although “Hard Knocks” won’t cover Belichick’s inaugural season at North Carolina, On3 has indicated that a documentary series will capture this significant chapter in college football history.
