“I give glory to God”: Former Southern Miss player secures a spot with Atlanta Falcons

Despite two disappointing losses in the 2024 NFL preseason for the Atlanta Falcons, former Southern Miss player Natrone Brooks is making a strong case for a spot on the team’s final 53-man roster. In Saturday’s narrow 14-13 loss to the Baltimore Ravens, Brooks, now in his second year as a cornerback, led the team with 13 tackles and recorded a forced fumble, showcasing his disruptive presence throughout the game.

This performance marked his best showing as a Falcon, and he cautioned opponents who might underestimate him due to his smaller stature.“It felt great to get the start and demonstrate my abilities,” Brooks remarked. “I know some people look at my size and think, ‘Let’s target him.’ But as I told them, I have that ‘small man syndrome.’ I understand they will try to come after me, but I have the heart of a fighter. I’m still physical… even at 169 [lbs].

After spending most of his rookie season on the practice squad, Brooks is determined to secure a place on the final roster. He remains unfazed by the pressure and expresses gratitude for his opportunities. “I try not to focus on it too much.

I give all the glory to God,” Brooks said. “I show up every day to practice, compete, and make plays on game day, always putting my best foot forward… I trust that whatever happens is in God’s hands.”Before entering the NFL, Brooks had an impressive career at Southern Miss, accumulating 82 tackleseight tackles for lossfour interceptions, and 21 pass deflections.

He was instrumental in the Golden Eagles‘ LendingTree Bowl victory over Rice in 2022, marking USM’s first bowl win since 2016 and their first postseason appearance since 2019.

Brooks and the Falcons will return to action this Friday at 6 p.m., hosting their third preseason game against the Jacksonville Jaguars.
