Josi to Compete for Historic Gold Medal at 2024 IIHF World Championship Final

Josi WC Final

Roman Josi is on the brink of creating World Championship history, having secured a spot in the gold medal game with Switzerland after a thrilling 3-2 shootout victory over Canada in the 2024 IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship semifinals. Their opponents in the final will be Czechia, who caused an upset by defeating Sweden 7-3 to reach the gold medal game for the first time since 2010. A win for Switzerland would mark their inaugural gold medal in tournament history, while a loss would result in their fourth silver medal, the third with Josi as part of the team.

Returning to the World Championship for the first time since 2019, Roman Josi has reunited with former Nashville Predators teammates Kevin Fiala and Nino Niederreiter, as well as fellow NHL stars Nico Hischier, Philipp Kurashev, Akira Schmid and Jonas Siegenthaler, to represent Switzerland. As a Norris Trophy finalist, Josi has been instrumental to his home country’s success in the tournament. Through nine games, Josi leads all defensemen in assists with 9 and points with 12, both personal bests for the nine-time World Championship participant. His point total is the highest and second-highest among his Swiss teammates, respectively.

Josi’s impressive performance in this tournament is consistent with his past successes. In 2013, he excelled by leading all defensemen in points (9) and goals (4), contributing significantly to Switzerland’s second silver medal win.

Josi’s outstanding performance earned him the titles of World Championship MVP and best defenseman, along with a spot on the World Championship all-star team, a first in Swiss history. In 2018, Josi took on the role of alternate captain, recording three assists and a +2 rating in five games, aiding Switzerland in securing their third silver medal. The gold medal game of the current tournament is scheduled for Sunday at 1:20 p.m. CT, with the broadcast available on the NHL Network.
