Canada Finishes 4th at IIHF World Championship After Loss to Sweden

Canada’s run at the 2023 IIHF World Championship came to a disappointing end on Sunday, as they fell 4-2 to Sweden in the bronze medal game in Montreal.

Despite goals from Dylan Cozens and Pierre-Luc Dubois, the Canadian squad was unable to overcome a strong performance by the Swedish team. Carl Grundstrom scored twice for Sweden, while Erik Karlsson and Marcus Johansson also found the back of the net.

Notably, defenseman Kaiden Guhle, who had an impressive tournament with 5 points in 9 games, was a healthy scratch for the bronze medal match. The fourth-place finish is a letdown for a Canadian team that had high hopes heading into the championship. However, there were still some bright spots, including the play of Cozens, Dubois, and Guhle.

As the players return to their NHL teams, they’ll have to regroup and look ahead to next season. But for now, the focus will be on what might have been at the 2023 IIHF World Championship.

Defenseman Kaiden Guhle was a healthy scratch as Canada opted to dress 14 forwards for their bronze medal matchup against Sweden at the IIHF World Championship. Despite the absence of Guhle, who had an impressive tournament with 5 points (1G, 4A) and a plus-4 rating in 9 games, Dylan Cozens and Pierre-Luc Dubois found the back of the net for Canada.

However, it wasn’t enough as Carl Grundstrom (2 goals), Erik Karlsson, and Marcus Johansson scored for Sweden to secure a 4-2 victory. Guhle, who was named Player of the Game once during his first appearance at the World Championship, will look to build on his strong performance as he returns to the NHL next season.
