Multiple former UNC basketball standouts waived ahead of 2024-2025 NBA season

While some of the moves were expected, there’s at least one that’s a bit surprising.

With the NBA preseason completed, teams across the league must finalize their rosters before the regular season begins on October 22.

Several former UNC basketball stars were impacted by the roster cuts, as four Tar Heels were waived since the preseason concluded on Friday night.

Cormac Ryan was waived by the Oklahoma City Thunder. He was on an Exhibit-10 contract with the franchise during the preseason.

After signing a two-way deal in February, Pete Nance was waived by the Cleveland Cavaliers. The former Tar Heel spent most of the 2023-2024 season with the Cleveland Charge before getting a chance to join the main roster, appearing in eight NBA contests.

The most surprising move might be the Miami Heat waiving Nassir Little. Miami signed Little on September 24, but his time with the team was short-lived.

Although it’s unfortunate that these former UNC basketball players didn’t make NBA rosters, there are still plenty of opportunities for them to showcase their skills. Whether competing in the G-League or, in some cases like Little, waiting for another NBA opportunity, these players will be ready for action whenever called upon.

Armando Bacot was also waived, similar to Ryan, both of whom had an Exhibit-10 deal.

It’s important to note that most Exhibit-10 players are waived but typically end up with their team’s G-League affiliate. While it would have been exciting to see one (or both) make the main roster at the start of the season, the most likely outcome is beginning the year in the G-League.
