Tonight’s matchup between the Utah Hockey Club and the New York Rangers, a chaotic scene unfolded after a whistle during the second period.
A scramble around the Utah net escalated into multiple spirited fights as players began to separate.
Former Oiler Sam Carrick squared off against another former Oiler, Michael Kesselring, alongside the boards, and Carrick decisively dominated the young Utah defender. This fight highlighted the lost toughness in the Oilers’ bottom six this season, an issue they may need to address. Carrick landed such significant blows that Kesselring was visibly bleeding from his head on his way to the penalty box.
The second fight involved two younger players, Adam Edstrom and Jack McBain, who exchanged harder punches, although much of the attention was on Carrick. Towards the end of their skirmish, Edstrom showed respect by giving a pat to McBain and pumped up the crowd to rally for a comeback.
The Utah Hockey Club is off to a strong start in their inaugural season with a 2-0 record, aiming to secure another win against last season’s President’s Trophy winners. With a young and talented roster, if they develop a sense of team toughness, they could make a significant push for the playoffs in their first year.
The Oilers will face Utah for the first time this season on November 29th in Salt Lake City. It’s always thrilling to welcome a new franchise, and if they continue to play exciting hockey, they will quickly win over fans that were absent during their time in Arizona.
