MSU’s Tom Izzo Shares Hilarious Draymond Green Story
NBA star Draymond Green has a deep affection for Michigan State that goes beyond what most alumni feel.
As a former standout for the Spartans, he remains one of the most legendary players in the program’s history, and his legacy was commemorated in 2019 when his No. 23 jersey was retired.
Despite the honor, Green was not pleased that particular day because MSU lost to Duke at the Breslin Center.
Coach Tom Izzo highlighted Green’s competitive nature during his appearance on the “Up and Adams Show,” where he recounted a humorous incident.
“When he speaks, everyone listens,” Izzo praised Green’s leadership. “He has a way of growling at you. He’s someone who’s never satisfied. We celebrated his jersey retirement while playing against Duke, and they beat us by about 18 points. After the game, he came to my office and lectured me on what I did wrong.”
Izzo also emphasized the importance of fostering a family-like environment in the program.
“We’re all connected in some way, but the family atmosphere is something we genuinely live by. It’s thanks to figures like Magic, Mateen, Steve Smith, who often visits from Atlanta, and of course, Draymond.
“A lot of former players get excited when March rolls around; I just received a call today from a kid playing in Hungary. They know what March Madness entails and what to expect, and it’s been enjoyable. I’m hopeful we’ll get to extend our run for a few more weeks.”
The Spartans have a strong chance to advance deep into this year’s NCAA Tournament, boasting one of the best defenses in the nation, along with improving shooting—a solid combination for tournament success.
Green played a pivotal role in MSU’s journey to the national championship in 2009. Although they fell short of victory that year, his contributions were vital during his tenure in East Lansing.
Regardless of how many games they win or how far they advance in the tournament, Izzo will continue to cultivate a family atmosphere, helping players grow and succeed while allowing them to stay true to themselves.
That’s why Green can be frustrated on a night dedicated to honoring him
