Gunnar Henderson, the shortstop for the Baltimore Orioles, scored twice against the New York Yankees on Wednesday, tying for the fourth-most runs in a single season in the franchise’s history.
The Orioles are still competing for the AL East title, largely due to Henderson’s performance. He began the game with an infield single, scoring the first run, and added an RBI single in the fourth before scoring again, contributing to a 6-1 score.
The Orioles won 9-7, never allowing the Yankees to take the lead. A loss would have handed the division title to New York.
Henderson had a strong game, finishing 3-for-5 with two runs and two RBI. The 23-year-old’s stats for the season are impressive: .285 batting average, 37 home runs, 91 RBI, 118 runs, 21 stolen bases, .905 OPS, and 9.2 WAR in 2024.
According to TSN’s StatsCentre, Henderson is now tied for the fourth-most runs in a single season by an Orioles player since the franchise’s move to Baltimore in 1954. The record is held by Roberto Alomar with 132 runs in 1996, followed by Frank Robinson with 122 runs in 1966, and Cal Ripken Jr.’s 121 runs in 1983. Henderson shares fourth place with Al Bumbry, who scored 118 runs in 1980.
Before Wednesday’s game, Henderson was tied for seventh alongside Ripken’s 1985 season. He surpassed Brady Anderson, who scored 117 runs in 1996, moving up the list.
With four games remaining in the regular season, Henderson has the potential to reach second place by scoring five more runs. The Orioles are currently 4.0 games behind the Yankees in the AL East standings. They have already secured a playoff spot and are just one win away from clinching the top AL Wild Card position if they don’t win the division.
The first pitch for the Orioles’ series finale against the Yankees is set for 7:05 p.m. ET on Thursday.
