Motivating: Heisman Trophy contender, Texas Longhorns Star Shared His Thoughts On Quinn Ewers’ NFL Debut

The Texas Longhorns head into the 2025 college football season as the top-ranked team in the preseason AP Poll for the first time in school history, and are favorites to win the National Championship on January 19 at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami. Quarterback Arch Manning, now the leading Heisman Trophy contender, is set to lead the way. After spending two seasons as a backup, Manning takes control of a squad that has gone 25-5 over the past two years making them the only team to reach the College Football Playoff both seasons.
Even after losing a record 12 players to the NFL Draft, including four starters on the offensive line, Texas remains a national contender. The Longhorns open their season on August 30 with a high-profile showdown against defending champions Ohio State in Columbus a major opportunity for Manning to prove he can exceed the legacy of former starter Quinn Ewers and secure his own place in Longhorn history.
Arch Manning recently shared his thoughts on Quinn Ewers’ NFL preseason debut with the Miami Dolphins, where the former Texas quarterback overcame a rough start to lead a dramatic 24-17 win over the Detroit Lions. Speaking at SEC Media Days, Manning praised Ewers’ performance, saying, “He balled, didn’t he? He’s a baller, man. He’s accurate and makes plays. I’m thrilled for him.” Ewers led a clutch 17-play drive in the final two minutes to seal the victory, showing the same calm and control that marked his college career.

Manning, who remains close friends with Ewers, said they still keep in touch and had recently texted about two-minute drill strategies. “I learned a ton from Quinn during my two years backing him up,” Manning said, also acknowledging the media pressure Ewers faced while he waited in the wings. As Ewers gears up for his third preseason appearance against the Jacksonville Jaguars, Manning’s support highlights the strong connection between the two quarterbacks.
Unlike Quinn Ewers, whose pocket-passing approach resulted in an average of -1.4 rushing yards per carry, Arch Manning adds a dual-threat element to the Texas offense. In limited playing time last season, Manning passed for 939 yards and nine touchdowns with a 67.8% completion rate, while also rushing for 108 yards and four touchdowns, averaging 4.3 yards per carry. Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian told ESPN that the team plans to take full advantage of Manning’s mobility with designed quarterback runs—marking a clear shift from the style seen under Ewers.
