Most Notable Unsigned Free Agent From Blackhawks Finally Signs Elsewhere

For many fans, reflecting on the dismal 2023-24 Blackhawks season is a painful experience. Despite the team’s lack of success, strong emotional connections were formed with every player. Therefore, it’s always intriguing to see where these players end up after the team moves on. Over the summer, the Blackhawks sought to turn a new page with numerous free-agent signings and a revamped roster, resulting in many former players finding new teams, with just a few still available.

On Saturday, that list narrowed down even further when one of the top producers from last season was finally signed by the Bruins to a professional tryout contract—Tyler Johnson. The Blackhawks acquired Johnson, along with a second-round pick in the 2023 draft, from the Lightning in exchange for Brent Seabrook’s contract in the summer of 2021. Johnson faced injury challenges during his three seasons in Chicago, appearing in just 149 games. Nevertheless, he played a critical role in the team’s offense, particularly during tough stretches in February and March when they were without Connor Bedard. Despite being part of a lineup that struggled historically, Johnson stood out as a bright spot. By season’s end, he expressed a desire to join a contender at 34 years old, leading to an amicable parting.

It wouldn’t be surprising if Johnson secures a position with the Bruins as a bottom-line or extra forward. The cap-constrained team is in need of veteran production at a low cost, and Johnson fits that bill. He has surpassed the 30-point mark for two consecutive years, including a 31-point season in 67 games last year, despite injuries. With more than 12 seasons of experience, he is a reliable all-around forward, even if he isn’t a standout scorer.

With Johnson now off the list of departing free agents from the Blackhawks, only three remain without contracts: Jarred Tinordi, Rem Pitlick, and Michal Teplý—none of whom are expected to play in the NHL this year after lackluster performances last season.
