More news: Will the Tigers advance? It might depend on these three players

CLEVELAND — The intense American League Central showdown is heading for a thrilling finish. The AL Division Series between the Tigers and Guardians is set for a critical Game 5 in Cleveland on Saturday afternoon. The winner will earn the right to face the Yankees in the ALCS. Detroit’s surprising playoff run continues after winning Games 2 and 3, but following a close Game 4, both teams will return to Progressive Field to determine the final outcome.

“We’ll be prepared,” said Tigers manager A.J. Hinch. “Elimination games are amazing. Everything we’ve worked towards has led us to Saturday. Our players will have a chance to regroup and play on the Guardians’ field. I fully expect them to be ready to compete as well. “Why wouldn’t both teams give it their all on Saturday?”

Who are the three essential players the Tigers need to secure a win?

Tarik Skubal

It’s almost a given that the Tigers need their top pitcher to perform at his best. Skubal excelled against the Guardians in Game 2, delivering seven scoreless innings as Detroit triumphed over Cleveland, 3-0. In his first two playoff starts, Skubal has racked up 13 scoreless innings, giving up just seven hits and one walk while striking out 14 batters against the Astros and Guardians.

At 27 years old, Skubal is the leading contender for the AL Cy Young Award this season, boasting a 2.39 ERA over 192 innings and securing the league’s pitching Triple Crown. The Tigers will rely on him to be at his peak performance for a shot at reaching the ALCS. “It’s always a relief to have Tarik Skubal on the mound,” Hinch remarked. “We’ll be ready for Saturday, and Tarik will be the starting pitcher.”

 Riley Greene

Throughout much of the postseason, the Tigers have received help from unexpected players like Wenceel Pérez, Zach McKinstry, and Andy Ibáñez. Detroit has needed someone to rise to the occasion in every win. While Greene hasn’t had his standout moment yet, he’s been a reliable presence in the middle of the lineup. In the ALDS, he has a 4-for-13 record with two walks. However, his regular-season OPS was .827, compared to just .619 during the postseason. A powerful hit from the former first-round pick could make a significant impact. “It’s a team effort,” Greene said. “I have faith in everyone in the lineup and on the bench. I just focus on doing my best, getting to the next hitter, and having a solid at-bat so that he can see plenty of pitches and really work hard in the box for the team.”

 Justyn-Henry Malloy

Both the Tigers and Guardians enjoy utilizing matchups strategically on the field. Malloy could play a pivotal role in this area for Game 5, particularly given his impressive .893 OPS against left-handed pitchers this season. Cleveland’s lefty Matthew Boyd, who started Game 2, will be ready to pitch again on regular rest. In that game, Malloy batted first for Detroit and contributed significantly, going 2-for-3 in a crucial victory. He has performed well this postseason, with a 5-for-7 record, including a pinch-hit double against closer Emmanuel Clase in the ninth inning of Game 4.

“He poses a genuine threat against left-handed pitchers,” Hinch remarked. “He’s also a challenge for right-handers, but at the moment, he’s excelling against lefties. He understands his position on this roster and knows his role. He often anticipates what’s needed. “I really enjoy giving him the opportunity to bat and supporting him through his development. In the last series against the Astros, he was crucial in facing their left-handed pitching, and I’m hoping for similar results in this series.”
