The North Carolina Tar Heels have yet to officially select a starting quarterback, but they have three strong candidates: Max Johnson, Conner Harrell, and Jacolby Criswell. The competition is expected to focus mainly on Johnson and Harrell. Harrell made his debut against Campbell and later started in the Duke’s Mayo Bowl for UNC.
While many anticipate that Johnson will secure the starting position, North Carolina has stated it will not disclose its choice until the Week 1 matchup against Minnesota. Despite this expectation, Johnson is ranked 15th out of 17 quarterbacks in the ACC according to College Football Network’s Cam Mellor, positioned between Cal’s Fernando Mendoza/Chandler Rogers and Stanford’s Ashton Daniels.
Johnson, a transfer from Texas A&M, would be the logical starter due to his extensive experience, having amassed 5,853 career passing yards and 47 touchdowns against SEC competition.

There’s no need to worry about Johnson being ranked 15th, as these are merely preseason evaluations and represent just one person’s perspective. Additionally, Johnson is likely viewed more favorably by UNC supporters.
The question remains: can Johnson surpass his preseason ranking and guide North Carolina to a more successful season.
