Looking to make some changes to the roster this off-season, Virginia Tech men’s basketball coach Mike Young also made some changes to his coaching staff. Young has brought back former associate head coach Chester Frazier as an assistant coach and a second stinit in Blacksburg.

This is a big move. Young bringing Frazier back will help in multiple ways, both on and off the court. He is replacing Christian Webster, who was let go by Young last month after the season ended in the ACC Tournament with a loss to California.

Chester Frazier’s return is a big boost to the staff

After spending the 2019-21 season at Virginia Tech, Frazier had a big hand in the Hokies’ on-court success that led to an NCAA Tournament appearance in 2021. He was not part of the staff in 2022 that captured the ACC Tournament championship as he had moved on to Illinois, but his fingerprints were on that roster in terms of recruiting.

After three years with Illinois, Frazier moved onto West Virginia this past season under Darian DeVries, who recently left for Indiana. As happens all the time with coaching changes, you wonder if some of the players in the portal from West Virginia will follow him to Blacksburg, as he is someone who has a lot of connections, and players enjoy playing for him.

“We are thrilled to welcome Chester, his wife, Sarah, and children, Chandler, Cameron and Courtney, back to Blacksburg,” Young said. “His passion, energy and tireless work ethic are exactly what we need. Chester has a deep understanding of our program’s culture, and his ability to connect with players, recruit at a high level and develop talent will be invaluable as we move forward.

“He has been a winner everywhere he has been. I am fortunate to call Chester a dear friend and am fired up to work alongside him once again.”

This is a nice addition to the coaching staff that should make an immediate impact this off-season and going forward.
