Mike Norvell And The FSU Announces Another Tommy Castellanos Big News Monday Evening
Florida State senior quarterback Tommy Castellanos has been named to the Maxwell Award Watch List, which honors college football’s most outstanding player each year.
A native of Waycross, Georgia, Castellanos transferred to Florida State in December after starting 20 games for Boston College during the 2023–24 seasons. Prior to that, he appeared in five games for UCF in 2022. Over his college career, he has completed 297 of 507 passes for 3,689 yards and 33 touchdowns, while also rushing for 1,427 yards and 15 touchdowns.
In 2023, Castellanos became the first player in Boston College history to surpass both 2,000 passing and 1,000 rushing yards in a single season. He threw for 2,248 yards and ran for 1,113 more, totaling 28 touchdowns. He started the first eight games of the 2024 season for the Eagles, throwing 18 touchdown passes to just five interceptions and recording at least one score in every game.
He earned MVP honors in the 2023 Fenway Bowl after rushing for a career-best 156 yards and scoring two touchdowns in a win over SMU. That season, he logged five 100-yard rushing games, including a standout 142-yard, four-touchdown effort against Army.
Castellanos began his college career in 2022 at UCF under head coach Gus Malzahn, who is now Florida State’s offensive coordinator. During that freshman year, he completed nine passes for 75 yards and rushed 14 times for 120 yards and a touchdown in limited action.
The Maxwell Award has recognized the top player in college football annually since 1937 and will announce its 89th winner in 2025. Finalists will be revealed on November 25, with the winner announced on December 11 during the ESPN Home Depot College Football Awards Show.
Florida State and Castellanos will kick off the 2025 season at the newly renovated Doak Campbell Stadium on August 30 at 3:30 p.m. against Alabama. The game will be nationally televised on ABC.
