Michigan State Newly Commit Received A Significant Boost After Rival’s Strong Efforts To Flip His Commitment

When Braylon Hodge committed to Michigan State football on June 1, it looked like he was set to join a talented linebacker group in East Lansing, with a real shot at becoming a standout player.
The Colorado native, a three-star recruit at the time, wasn’t drawing much attention on the recruiting trail. His decision to choose Jonathan Smith and the Spartans over hometown Colorado and several other programs came as a bit of a surprise, especially since he wasn’t one of the most highly coveted prospects in his class.
But things have shifted quickly.
Now, major programs like Colorado, Michigan, and Texas are making strong efforts to flip Hodge’s commitment, and recruiting analysts are taking notice—he was recently upgraded to a four-star prospect.

Hodge received a significant boost in his recruiting profile on Rivals, pushing him up to a composite four-star status. He’s now ranked No. 274 nationally, the 18th-best linebacker in the country, and the top overall prospect in the state of Colorado.
It’s been exciting to see his rise, but the question now is whether Michigan State can hold onto him. The Spartans are facing serious competition—Hodge just took a visit to Colorado, and both Texas and Michigan have extended offers, actively trying to flip him. He’s also expected to visit Texas this week, which surely puts Jonathan Smith and his staff on high alert.
The coaching staff needs to go all-in to keep Hodge committed, especially since he clearly has star potential and was recognized early in the process by this staff.
Critics may question Smith’s game management or defensive schemes, but when it comes to evaluating talent, he and his staff have proven they’re ahead of the curve—several 2026 commits have also seen big rankings jumps recently.
