Michigan State head coach Jonathan Smith provided clarification on a recent news update
As spring football gets underway and visits are in full swing, Spartans coach Jonathan Smith is focusing heavily on the 2027 recruiting class.
Recently, the Spartans have been welcoming numerous 2027 prospects and are actively working on building relationships and extending offers.
One of the latest offers went to Mason Oglesby, a versatile player from New Palestine, Indiana, who plays defensive end, linebacker, and tight end. After visiting the campus, Oglesby received his second Big Ten offer, making it his fifth overall.
In a recent scouting report, Bryan Ault of Prep Redzone noted:
“Oglesby has been on the radar since his freshman year and is a player that head coach Kyle Ralph has great confidence in. He’s an impressive outside linebacker with good size and a strong frame. He excels as a disruptive pass rusher, is solid against the run, and is an excellent open-field tackler. Additionally, he plays tight end on offense.”
With his potential to transition to a defensive end at the next level, Michigan State is likely excited about Oglesby’s high upside. Standing at 6-foot-3 and weighing 225 pounds, he has the physicality to develop into a premier pass rusher. With further refinement and technique coaching from defensive coordinator Joe Rossi and defensive ends coach Chad Wilt, Oglesby could be a valuable asset for the Spartans.
Coach Smith and his staff are prioritizing relationship-building and recruiting in the Midwest, recognizing that states like Ohio, Indiana, and Illinois have historically been key areas for MSU. The new coaching team is committed to winning local recruiting battles as a top priority.
The 2026 class is already showing promise, with quarterback Kayd Coffman and tight end Eli Bickel both hailing from Michigan, while tight ends Joey Caudill and Eddie Whiting come from Ohio and North Dakota, respectively.
In the coming weeks, the Spartans will be hosting several unofficial visits along with a number of official visits for their top 2026 prospects.
