Michigan State football’s spring training is nearly over.
The Spartans wrapped up their 14th practice out of 15 on Thursday, right after the spring transfer portal opened.
Following the practice, Michigan State coach Jonathan Smith shared some updates, discussing various topics including practice performance, injuries, and the transfer portal
Below is a transcript from Smith’s opening statement of his presser
Let’s kick things off by wishing our gymnastics team good luck tonight at the NCAA Championships! We just finished practice 14 today. We’ll have some additional work on Saturday, including a bit of scrimmage and practice, but overall, I feel really good about what we’ve accomplished during the last five weeks.
The players have stayed focused and continued to put in the effort. Saturday will also be a family day, where many families will come together to watch and share a meal after practice. It’s a fantastic way to wrap things up as a program.
Regarding the two scrimmages, I haven’t updated you since the last one. We made significant progress during the 95 snaps from last Saturday. Overall, I was pleased with the defense—the tackling and effort were strong, making it challenging for the offense. I feel good about the results from the second scrimmage.
These practices are crucial for evaluating our players and helping them improve. It’s an essential period for transitioning into the program and preparing for a productive summer as we gear up for August camp.
I also want to mention that we plan to revive the “Meet the Spartans” event this August, aiming for the 21st, just before our first home game. I learned about some of the traditions associated with it during our recent meetings. Stay tuned for more details on that!
