Michigan Head Coach Tom Izzo Shocked the NCAA Tournament with Major Announcement
Michigan State coach Tom Izzo has been a key player in the long-standing in-state rivalry for many years and knows it better than anyone associated with the Spartans. He’s witnessed the intensity it brings out in both teams and their fans.
Izzo understands that Michigan State has a strong dislike for Michigan. That’s why it was surprising when the coach, who has been with the Spartans for 30 years, revealed he would actually be cheering for the Wolverines in their upcoming Round of 32 match against Texas A&M on Saturday.
During a press conference on Saturday, Izzo was asked about the success the Big Ten has experienced in the tournament, as Purdue’s recent victory over McNeese marked the ninth win for the conference at this early stage of March Madness.
“I love to boast about it because people often criticize the Big Ten, thinking we’re slow or focusing on things that happened 20 years ago,” Izzo explained. “Either you all aren’t doing a good job, or we’re not, or someone isn’t because this league is really strong. We have excellent coaches.
“I’m rooting for them all. Although I might have to keep it a secret, I’m going to support Michigan today, too. That’s unusual.”
Izzo’s statement highlights his commitment to his conference, where he became the all-time winningest coach this season. The rivalry in basketball between Michigan State and Michigan remains intense, even though the Spartans swept the Wolverines this season. Given the recent midcourt altercation, it’s clear that Izzo is deeply invested in the success of his conference.
Izzo’s 2000 team was the last Big Ten squad to win a national championship. Despite the conference’s talent over the years, this championship drought continues to affect its reputation, and until another Big Ten champion emerges, it won’t receive the respect it deserves.
