Michael Thomas just gave the Saints more in 1 day than he did in the past 2 years

Michael Thomas just gave the Saints more in 1 day than he did in the past 2 years as Saints agree to a deal with Kool-Aid McKinstry

Earlier this offseason, the New Orleans Saints officially released Michael Thomas and Jameis Winston as post-June 1 cuts. This strategic move enables teams to release players to enter free agency while also easing the burden of salary cap costs by spreading them over the current and following years. Essentially, this approach benefits both teams managing their salary cap constraints and players seeking new beginnings.

The Saints, renowned for their shrewd dealings in light of restricted cap resources, exemplified this by designating Thomas as a post-June 1 cut.

The Saints are deferring salary cap expenses by freeing Thomas

Thomas is currently a free agent with no new team in sight, making a reunion with the Saints highly improbable. As of now, Thomas’ 2024 cap hit of $12.4 million will decrease to $8.9 million for the remainder of the season, but it will leave a $11.1 million dead money charge for 2025. Following their move with Thomas, the Saints will enjoy a cap credit of $1.21 million on June 2.

Although he was one of the premier wide receivers in the NFL during his time with the Saints, Thomas struggled with injuries in his final four years in New Orleans.

Thomas appeared in only 20 games over the course of those four years with the Saints

He only played in three games over the span of two seasons from 2021 to 2022.

Fans of the Saints will forever be grateful for Thomas’ contributions from 2016 to 2019. His remarkable 149-reception season in 2019 stands out as one of the greatest seasons by any wide receiver in NFL history. It seems like a wise decision for both the Saints and Thomas to part ways at this stage of his career.
