Head coach Mike McDaniel stated on Tuesday that the team has 48 hours to decide on their starting quarterback for Week 4 against the Tennessee Titans.
McDaniel mentioned that the Dolphins are considering bringing in outside help for the quarterback role while Tua Tagovailoa is recovering from the concussion he sustained in Week 2. However, it seems the Dolphins will not pursue external assistance through a trade. According to Jeremy Fowler from ESPN, the team is not planning to trade for a quarterback while Tua remains on injured reserve.
“A trade for a passer doesn’t seem likely at this point,” Fowler wrote. “A source said Miami is ‘not much into it at this time.’ Keep in mind, all signs are that Tagovailoa wants to play again this season, and he’s eligible as early as Week 7. Making a flashy move for a quarterback, potentially disrupting the loose timeline and plans of Tagovailoa and the team, comes with risk.”
There is a risk that the 1-2 Dolphins’ playoff chances could be compromised by the time Tua is able to return if the quarterback situation in Miami doesn’t get better. Backup quarterback Skylar Thompson struggled on Sunday before suffering a rib injury during the Dolphins’ 24-3 loss to the Seattle Seahawks.
His replacement, Tim Boyle, did not perform any better when he entered the game. By choosing not to be aggressive in the trade market, the Dolphins indicate that they are anticipating a relatively quick return for Tua once he is eligible to come off injured reserve.
