There are still plenty of upset people at the Nebraska Cornhuskers as a whole. As you know by now, the Tennessee football team and Cornhuskers were supposed to play a home-and-home series starting in 2026, but that’s no more after Nebraska pulled out.
Really? Athletic director Troy Dannen offered up a lame excuse, which didn’t help the matter. Leave it to Matt Rhule to find a way to make things worse. When discussing non-conference games this week, Rhule pretty much said teams in the Big Ten shouldn’t go with hard ones because of the incredible Big Ten gauntlet teams need to go through.
Hey, we get it, as you want easy games to work things out and build confidence. However, saying this right after bailing on Tennessee is a brutal look:
Matt Rhule found a way to make Tennessee fans even angrier with Nebraska
Again, we understand the point Rhule was trying to make, but this coming so soon after Nebraska put Tennessee in a tough spot is disappointing. Vols athletic director Danny White was not happy at all, making it clear on social media that Tennessee had nothing to do with the series getting canceled.
Instead, he threw the Cornhuskers and Dannen under the bus for being fully responsible for everything. Moving forward, White is going to have to work overtime to find a suitable replacement to fill the two games for 2026 and 2027.
As for Nebraska, don’t expect the Big Ten side to race to find a top contender to replace Tennessee on its schedule. Instead, look for Dannen and Co. to find an easy matchup for his team to take advantage of. If karma has anything to say about things, though, Tennessee fans will be ready for Nebraska to suffer an upset loss. That’s how this story needs to end, right?
