Calgary Flames Add a Pair of Depth Defencemen

The Calgary Flames are making headlines today after signing depth defenseman Jarred Tinordi to a two-way contract. Additionally, they have brought in veteran defenseman Tyson Barrie on a professional tryout (PTO). With all the recent roster changes made by general manager Craig Conroy, these moves will enhance the team’s depth in preparation for the 2024 NHL training camp.

The signing of Jarred Tinordi and Tyson Barrie adds depth to the Calgary Flames’ defense. Tinordi’s NHL contract is valued at $800,000, which is a solid deal for Calgary if he spends some time with the main roster.

The son of former NHL player Mark Tinordi, Jarred stands at 6-foot-6 and is quite the physical presence, although he has struggled to establish himself in the NHL.

Last season marked his career-high with 52 games played over nine seasons. Given that defensemen often take longer to develop, Tinordi may still have several productive years ahead, especially since he’s just now reaching his peak in terms of NHL games played. Additionally, if he has a strong season with Calgary, he could become a valuable asset that the team might trade for a draft pick at the deadline.

As seen with players like Vincent Desharnais and Nikita Zadorov, even if they don’t excel during the regular season, the playoffs can present different opportunities. Tinordi could serve as an effective third-pair defenseman for a playoff-bound team in need of that extra edge.

Tyson Barrie, “We’ll Take That.

When discussing potential trade deadline assets, Tyson Barrie comes into the picture. He signed a contract with Calgary today, joining Tinordi. Barrie, a skilled right-shot defenseman known for his power play prowess, is 33 years old and has played 809 NHL games. He could provide the depth and experience that a playoff team might seek. There’s no reason to think he can’t still be effective; last season with the Nashville Predators, he averaged over 18 minutes of ice time per game.

From the 2013-14 season to 2022-23, he consistently recorded between 38 and 59 points each year. Offering him a professional tryout makes perfect sense, and if he secures a spot on the team, it would be beneficial.

His presence would not only enhance the locker room dynamic but also serve as potential trade leverage as the deadline approaches. Acquiring draft picks is a priority for GM Conroy right now.

The Calgary Flames have undergone significant changes since last year, particularly on their blue line. Given the players they’ve let go, it’s understandable why playoff aspirations were once so high. Along with Zadorov, Chris Tanev and Noah Hanifin have also been traded since last season.

Consequently, Conroy needs to replenish the roster. These moves signal a clear intent to start a rebuild. It’s likely to be a challenging season for Calgary, but it could also present valuable opportunities for both Tinordi and Barrie.
