BREAKING: Memphis adds Experienced Veteran head coach to Ryan Silverfield staff

The Tigers are coming off a successful 10-win season. Joe Cauthen, who previously worked as Utah State’s defensive coordinator under the recently dismissed Blake Anderson and brings over 30 years of coaching experience, has joined the football staff at Memphis Tigers.

Cauthen will take on the role of defensive analyst in Ryan Silverfield’s Memphis program, which kicks off its 2024 season on August 31 at home against North Alabama.

For Cauthen, a Texas native and graduate of Stephen F. Austin, this move marks a return to coaching in Tennessee. He previously spent three seasons in the Volunteer State as an assistant for Rick Stockstill at MTSU.

Furthermore, Cauthen has SEC experience from his time as a defensive analyst at Arkansas, and he also had an extended tenure working alongside Anderson at Arkansas State from 2014-18.

He worked as the defensive coordinator for Dana Holgorsen at Houston for two seasons. Houston is now in its second season as a member of the Big 12 conference.

Cauthen has served as a defensive coordinator for six different college programs.

Memphis, coming off a 10-win season in 2023 and a victory against Iowa State, aims to maintain its momentum under Silverfield in the upcoming fall.

The Tigers will kick off their season against FCS team North Alabama, followed by a home game against Gerad Parker’s Troy Trojans. They will then face a former head coach, Mike Norvell, and his team at Florida State.
