LSU Football Rival, SEC Powerhouse Loses Star Running Back to Injury in Camp

Brian Kelly and the LSU Tigers wrapped up Week 3 of Fall Camp on Saturday night in Baton Rouge, continuing preparations for their season opener at Clemson, now less than two weeks away.

The Tigers held a scrimmage under the lights at Tiger Stadium, simulating a night game environment. So far, LSU has been fortunate to avoid major injuries during camp — something one of their SEC rivals can’t say.

Over in Tuscaloosa, Alabama held its own scrimmage on Saturday, but the Crimson Tide took a significant hit to their offense. Starting running back Jam Miller suffered an upper-body injury and underwent a procedure later that evening, head coach Kalen DeBoer confirmed. As a result, Miller will miss Alabama’s opener against Florida State, and there’s currently no timetable for his return.

“Jam should recover fully,” DeBoer said, “but we’re still determining when that return will be.”

Miller was coming off a breakout 2024 season, where he led the team with 668 rushing yards on 145 carries, scoring seven touchdowns after earning the starting job.

His absence is a blow to an Alabama team looking to rebound from a 9–4 campaign last year. The Tide will now have to lean on their depth in the backfield heading into a high-stakes matchup against Florida State.

Meanwhile, Alabama recently named redshirt junior Ty Simpson as its starting quarterback for the 2025 season. The 6-foot-2, 208-pound QB has patiently waited his turn and earned the nod over five-star freshman Keelon Russell and Washington transfer Austin Mack.

“Ty is an accurate passer who throws a very catchable ball,” DeBoer said during SEC Media Days in July. “Whether it’s a deep shot, a crossing route, or a quick out, he delivers it in a way that’s easy for receivers to catch. That’s a big deal.”

Simpson will now lead the Crimson Tide offense as they look to start the season strong—despite the early setback in the backfield.
