Pat Kelsey’s debut season at Louisville was a clear success, with the Cardinals finishing 27-8—marking their highest win total since the 2014–15 season—and earning their first NCAA Tournament berth since 2019. However, injuries hampered their postseason hopes, and they were eliminated by Creighton in the first round.

Heading into Kelsey’s second year at the helm, the Louisville staff has overhauled the roster, bringing in the No. 21-ranked transfer class in the country, according to On3. The new group includes proven starters such as former Virginia guard Isaac McKneely, Xavier’s Ryan Conwell, and Kennesaw State’s Adrian Wooley.

Speaking to media last week, Kelsey addressed the challenge of managing playing time for so many experienced transfers.

“Every team faces this,” Kelsey said. “Guys want to start, want to play more—that’s what competitors do. If you have players who aren’t hungry for a bigger role, then they’re probably not the kind of players you want. One of our biggest assets is our depth. We emphasized that last year too, but injuries just kept piling up. By the time we got to the NCAA Tournament, we were looking around wondering, ‘Where did everyone go?’”

Louisville endured a string of tough injuries during their standout season. Forward Kasean Pryor tore his ACL in the team’s seventh game against Oklahoma, guard Koren Johnson missed significant time with a shoulder issue, and BYU transfer Aly Khalifa redshirted to recover from a nagging knee injury. To top it off, sharpshooter Reyne Smith aggravated an ankle injury during the NCAA Tournament loss to Creighton. Despite all the setbacks, the Cardinals still managed to put together one of their best seasons in recent memory.

Injuries Plagued Louisville’s Breakout Season,

“Our biggest strength is our depth,” head coach Pat Kelsey said. “We have a locker room full of guys who are all in—committed to winning and building a championship-caliber culture. Roles and minutes will sort themselves out through competition. Our practices are incredibly competitive, and that’s where those decisions begin to take shape. That process will continue through the fall and into the season opener.

I know every coach says this in August, but I truly believe we have one of the deepest rosters in the country. That depth will be a huge asset.”

In addition to key returners like Pryor and J’Vonne Hadley, Louisville brought in three high-impact transfers and added standout freshman Mikel Brown Jr., who turned heads at this summer’s FIBA U19 World Cup. With so much talent across the board, shaping the starting lineup will be a strategic challenge—but one Kelsey, the reigning 2025 ACC Coach of the Year, is ready to take on.
