Leeds face battle to keep top star defender after bombshell Bundesliga chief admission

Leeds United has had a challenging summer marked by significant player departures, and they may face another loss as a Bundesliga club is openly expressing interest in one of their top stars.

The Yorkshire team is focused on regaining promotion to the Premier League after falling short in the Championship play-off final against Southampton in May. That defeat indicated that major changes to the squad were imminent, primarily involving outgoing players. Notably, talented teenager Archie Gray has moved to Tottenham, and West Ham has signed Crysenio Summerville.

Additionally, players like Georginio Rutter and Wilfried Gnonto are also rumored to be on the move. However, a potential deal that could be in the works is the return of versatile Austrian defender Max Wober to Borussia Monchengladbach.

Max Wober, 26, spent the previous season on loan at Borussia Monchengladbach, and sporting director Roland Virkus has publicly mentioned the possibility of him returning to the club.

“These Max Wobers might come back onto the market right at the end,” he stated. “They might not fit into their current club’s plans, or they could seek opportunities elsewhere due to competition for their position.”

According to sources from TEAMtalk, Everton remains interested in signing Wilfried Gnonto after a pursuit last summer that led the Italian player to go on strike to facilitate a transfer. Additionally, clubs from Italy are reportedly keeping an eye on him.

Meanwhile, Leeds manager Daniel Farke has provided a candid overview of the club’s financial situation as supporters hope for additional signings before the upcoming season begins.

“Our situation is quite clear. After selling a winger, an offensive player like Cree, it’s evident that we’d like to bring in someone for that position,” Farke explained.

He emphasized the financial constraints the club is facing, stating, “It’s not as if we can immediately reinvest all the money from a transfer like Cree’s. We still need to address some past financial issues and ensure compliance with financial regulations, which sometimes necessitates selling a player.”

Farke acknowledged the need for caution in their spending, indicating that the club is operating with limited resources as they prepare for the new season, starting with a home match against Portsmouth on Saturday.

Does Gladbach want Leeds’ Wober?

“It’s not as if we can immediately utilize the full value from a player like Archie Gray or Crysencio Summerville along with a significant amount of money right now. Currently, we still need to address some past mistakes and ensure compliance with financial regulations, which sometimes necessitates the decision to sell a player.

We are still dealing with the consequences of previous missteps, and we have to bear the cost of those decisions. Last season, we were quite disciplined and cautious with our expenditures.

We need to be prudent, and it’s well known that we can’t simply take all the funds from a transfer like Summerville’s and spend them immediately. Our resources are quite limited.”

Leeds will kick off the new season at home against Portsmouth on Saturday.
