Longtime Cubs Pitcher Kyle Hendricks Joins the Angels
Kyle Hendricks, a veteran right-hander for the Chicago Cubs, has officially signed with the Los Angeles Angels this week, marking a major transition from his former team. The Angels finalized a one-year contract worth $ 2.5 million with Hendricks on Thursday.
Despite his strong ties to Chicago, Hendricks is realistic about his circumstances. He recognizes that his recent struggles, especially a tough start to the 2024 season, could affect his opportunities as a 34-year-old free agent.
Reflecting on his time with the Cubs, he said, “I would have loved to be a Cub my whole life, if it could have happened.” However, he acknowledges the need to perform, admitting, “It just didn’t happen for me.” He expressed his happiness for the Cubs, noting, “They’re in the window right now where they’re really looking to go win with what they have set up.”
Hendricks was surprised by how quickly the Angels pursued him. Playing so close to his hometown provides him with a great opportunity to continue his career, but it also means leaving behind his significant time in Chicago. He shared his excitement, saying, “I’m just happy I have another opportunity to play baseball. I just love pitching and playing so much.” He also looked forward to joining “the Angels,” highlighting “They have so many good, young players” and his eagerness to engage with them about baseball.
Throughout his 11 seasons in Major League Baseball, Hendricks dedicated his career to the Cubs, achieving a 97-81 record and a 3.68 ERA across 270 starts. He was the last active player from the Cubs’ legendary 2016 World Series team, which ended the franchise’s 108-year championship drought.
To make room for Hendricks on their 40-man roster, the Angels designated right-hander Ryan Miller for assignment.
