Knicks’ Karl-Anthony Towns is Proudly Representing New York
It felt like a scene from a wrestling promo. After the Knicks’ 116-94 victory over the Milwaukee Bucks, Jalen Brunson was addressing reporters when the atmosphere shifted—Karl-Anthony Towns, the newly acquired All-Star, made a grand entrance playing iconic New York rap from his phone. Towns, who joined the Knicks last month, is unapologetically embracing his New York roots, from the music he blasts to his choice of vintage Knicks apparel.
Hailing from Edison, NJ, Towns feels a strong connection to New York, which he describes as the “Mecca” of basketball and holds special significance for his family. His Dominican heritage adds to this pride, as his family celebrates their roots. Towns is fully invested in being part of the New York scene, even earning nicknames like “The Big Bodega” and “Bodega KAT.”
On the court, he’s displaying this enthusiasm with flair—he aims to dunk hard on opponents and is one of the best rebounders so far this season. Towns has come to New York and has not shied away; instead, he’s emerged as one of the league’s top scorers, averaging 24.3 points with impressive shooting efficiency.
“The guys in this locker room have welcomed me with open arms,” Towns shared. He appreciates how his teammates, especially Jalen Brunson (whom he calls “Cap”), are helping him adjust, forming a partnership that promises to be a powerful pick-and-roll combination as their chemistry develops.
Reunited with coach Tom Thibodeau, who previously guided him in Minnesota, Towns is positioned for a standout season. Thibodeau’s ability to maximize big men is well-known, and he’s empowering Towns to capitalize on his skill set, particularly his 3-point shooting. The Knicks have seen success when Towns takes on a significant shooting role, evident in their 3-1 record when he launches at least five three-pointers.
As Towns adapts to life in New York, he is embracing his identity both on and off the court. His approach signifies a blend of individuality and teamwork that embodies the spirit of New York. With time, Towns’ contributions will make the Knicks a stronger team, showcasing how great things often require patience.
