Georgia’s quarterback room will see a slight tweak.
The Bulldogs’ assistant quarterbacks coach Montgomery VanGorder will leave the program to take a job with the Philadephia Eagles as an offensive assistant, 247Sports and CBS Sports’ Matt Zenitz first reported. VanGorder has been with the Georgia football program since 2019 in several different responsibilities, ranging from quality control to assistant quarterbacks coach.
VanGorder has played a hands-on role with quarterback recruiting over the last several recruiting cycles, including via his relationship with recent quarterback recruitments Ryan Montgomery and Jared Curtis.
VanGorder’s coaching career began after a successful playing career in his own right. The son of former NFL coach Brian VanGorder, Montgomery played for Brian Kelly at Notre Dame from 2014-2017 before transferring to Youngstown State to finish up his college career at quarterback.
Shortly after his playing days were complete, VanGorder pivoted to a coaching role on Kirby Smart’s staff.
VanGorder’s roles and responsibilities have grown over the last several seasons, stepping into an assistant quarterbacks coach role alongside Mike Bobo. Bobo has leaned heavily on VanGorder, especially when it comes to quarterback recruiting over the last several cycles. Anytime Dawgs247 interviews quarterback recruits, VanGorder’s name comes up.
Affectionately referred to as “Coach Gummy” by players, he played a critical role in the signing of 2025 quarterback Ryan Montgomery.
“Coach Bobo and Coach Gummy, and we watched film for probably 3 or 3.5 hours. So I know no other recruit is doing that, watching film for that long after having just watched practice. But that’s me. That’s really what I want to do. I just want to get better and just learn as much as I can,” Montgomery said of VanGorder during his recruitment. “After that, we talked for a little bit with Coach Bobo and Coach Gummy. I kinda told them my thoughts and that — I just told them: ‘This is the spot for me. I know I want to be here. I know I can thrive here.’ Like I said earlier, my mentality in general fits very well with the mentality of Georgia and the mentality of Coach Smart. After that, I think I kinda sparked something in Coach Bobo and Coach Gummy’s heads.”
VanGorder has had his sights on an on-field college role or a step up to the NFL level. He will now get that in the form of the defending Super Bowl champions who see the Georgia influence increase on a daily basis
