Steve Young makes honest admission on Kellen Moore and BYU “He needs to be a future coach at BYU”

Former Boise State standout Kellen Moore is now the offensive coordinator for the Philadelphia Eagles, guiding them to a season-opening victory against the Packers on Friday night in Brazil.

Steve Young was a guest on Boise radio station 95.3 FM on Friday and made an entertaining remark about Kellen Moore and BYU. He humorously suggested that the Boise State fanbase would be quite shocked if Kellen Moore ever took on a coaching role at BYU, given the context.

“I’ll whisper it to you guys, I want Kellen — he needs to be a future coach at BYU”

According to Church Newsroom, Kellen Moore is a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

“Another Latter-day Saint joined the Eagles this offseason when Kellen Moore was appointed as their offensive coordinator.”

Regarded as one of the leading offensive coordinators in the NFL, Kellen Moore has also interviewed for head coaching positions, including with the LA Chargers this offseason.

I’m not sure why Kellen Moore would be interested in BYU, but it’s interesting that Steve Young playfully mentioned Moore alongside the university, even if it was done lightheartedly. The similarities with BYU Basketball coach Kevin Young are clear—both are high-profile pro assistants who are LDS and have interviewed for head coaching roles in the NBA and NFL. While I never expected Kevin Young to join BYU, that doesn’t necessarily mean Kellen would follow suit. Kalani Sitake is currently the head coach, and BYU has started the season 2-0.

If Kellen were to consider BYU, I believe he would only think about the head coaching position, rather than offensive coordinator. Should he contemplate a move to BYU, I would expect the university to assure him of strong support in NIL, similar to what Kevin Young has received for the basketball program. While Moore’s background is in the NFL, it would be intriguing to see how he would pitch his experience to potential recruits if there were a head coaching opportunity at BYU in the future.
