JUST iN: Washington Nationals Pitching Prospect Has Had a Breakout Year

The Washington Nationals have made significant progress in their rebuilding efforts during the 2024 season.

Although they have been officially eliminated from playoff contention, this year can still be viewed as a success for the franchise. Expectations were low heading into 2024, yet there have been numerous positive developments despite a limited number of wins.

The team’s young prospects are beginning to make their mark at the major league level, with the outfield trio of James Wood, Dylan Crews, and Jacob Young likely set to be the starters in 2025.

In the infield, C.J. Abrams and Luis Garcia Jr. have been establishing themselves over the past few years. Abrams earned his first All-Star selection this season after a strong first half as a two-way shortstop.

While some prospects are already contributing at the big league level, the Nationals also boast a robust farm system with more talent on the way.

Recently, MLB.com highlighted Andry Lara, a right-handed pitcher who had a breakout minor league season. Lara had struggled previously but rebounded impressively this summer with a 3.34 ERA and 132 strikeouts in 134 2/3 innings across High-A and Double-A, showcasing his fastball and slider. He is now eligible for the Rule 5 Draft this winter and may have earned a spot on Washington’s 40-man roster.

Lara’s development is encouraging for the Nationals as he excelled at various minor league levels in 2024.

Pitching will be a key focus for Washington in the upcoming season, especially with Patrick Corbin’s substantial contract coming off the books. This opens up at least one spot in the rotation, where Lara could vie for an opportunity in 2025.

While many hitting prospects are showing promise, the advancement of pitching prospects will be crucial to the organization’s success next season. If they can secure solid pitching performances in 2025, the Nationals may contend for a playoff spot sooner than expected.
