Just In: UNC football head coach Mack Brown announces major commitment from a top-tier 300-Pound OL

An offensive guard from Katy High School (Texas), visited the UNC football program in person last week and received an offer from Mack Brown and his team before departing campus.

This visit came after Nelson’s official trips to Pitt and Vanderbilt earlier in the month, with these three schools being his final choices. On Friday afternoon, the 6-foot-3, 300-pound rising senior announced his “100%” commitment to the Tar Heels in a social media post.

Nelson, who received over a dozen offers during his recruitment, is a three-star prospect ranked at No. 1,073 overall, No. 174 in Texas, and No. 74 among interior offensive linemen according to the 247Sports 2025 Composite.

UNC football’s 2025 recruiting class now has 12 verbal commitments, including three composite four-star players like offensive tackle Alex Payne from Gainesville High School (Ga.), as well as nine three-star recruits.

By joining the team, the addition of Byron Nelson, a undoubtedly promising player, pushed the Tar Heels’ recruiting class to No. 37 overall in the country, according to 247Sports. This currently places them behind seven other ACC schools in the rankings: Clemson at No. 7, Miami at No. 16, Georgia Tech at No. 18, Syracuse at No. 21, Stanford at No. 22, Duke at No. 23, and Pitt at No. 34.
