Ohio State will pay a significant buyout for the cancellation of the 2025 UConn football game

On Monday, Ohio State announced that the scheduled 2025 home football game against UConn had been canceled. The cancellation was mutual, and as per the contract, Ohio State was obligated to pay UConn a $1.95 million guarantee for the game.

According to a cancellation letter obtained through a public records request, Ohio State has agreed to pay UConn $650,000 in liquidated damages to settle the termination of the contract, which represents one-third of the original guarantee. To replace the UConn game, Ohio State has added a home game against Grambling State on Saturday, Sept. 6, 2025. In addition to the Grambling State game, Ohio State’s 2025 schedule includes a season opener at home against Texas on Aug. 30 and a home game against the Ohio Bobcats on Sept. 13. Moreover, Ohio State’s Big Ten opponents for 2025 are already determined, with home games against Minnesota, Penn State, Rutgers, and UCLA, and away games against Illinois, Michigan, Purdue, Washington, and Wisconsin.
