JUST IN: Tykes caretaker boss reveals his ‘plan’ to beat Cobblers and seal Barnsley’s place in League One play-offs

Barnsley Caretaker Manager Promises Attacking Football in Must-Win Season Finale

Barnsley caretaker boss Martin Devaney has vowed to unleash an attacking brand of football when his side takes on Northampton Town in their crucial final game of the season at Oakwell.

Devaney has been placed in charge following the departure of manager Neill Collins, with the Tykes needing a win on Saturday to secure a spot in the League One playoffs. Despite their recent struggles, winning just two of their last 11 matches, Devaney is determined to approach the game with a positive mindset.

“I am excited,” said Devaney. “When I was asked to take charge this week, there was no hesitation from me.” The caretaker manager emphasized the importance of the match, stating, “It’s a massive game for everyone, and I have just been rallying the boys this week, let’s be really positive.”

Devaney is confident that the team’s destiny is in their own hands, and he believes the Barnsley faithful will create a special atmosphere to spur the players on. “It’s in our hands which is fantastic and what we want. It’s down to us as a team and a club. I know the fans will make it a special day,” he added.

With the pressure on, Devaney is determined to unleash an attacking brand of football, vowing to “let the shackles off” and give the team the freedom to express themselves on the pitch. The caretaker boss is fully aware of the significance of the match and is ready to lead Barnsley to a crucial victory in their pursuit of a playoff spot.

“It’s about maintaining organization while also unleashing the players to enjoy themselves, showcase their skills, and adopt an attacking style of play. We understand that Northampton will pose threats in specific areas, but we will be ready for that challenge.

The approach will be different. I intend to encourage a more forward-thinking strategy, operating in their half, increasing crosses, and incorporating a slightly more direct style of play. I am aware of the club’s expectations and the tactics that have brought us success. Defensively, we will focus on high-pressing and counter-pressing.

I am solely focused on the upcoming game. Other matches are not on my radar. Our primary goal is to secure a victory. I have instructed the players to express themselves on the field. They are just three games away from Wembley and four from promotion.”
