JUST IN: Tigers’ Talented pitcher leaves game early due to injury in 8-3 defeat against Royals

The Kansas City Royals defeated the Detroit Tigers 8-3 on Monday night, extending their winning streak to four games. Michael Massey and Salvador Perez hit home runs for the Royals, while Michael Wacha pitched seven strong innings to earn his third consecutive win.

Massey opened the scoring with a leadoff homer in the second inning, breaking Tigers starter Reese Olson’s homerless streak of 48 1/3 innings, which was the longest in the majors this season. Massey later hit a line drive off Olson’s right hip, leading to a throwing error by catcher Jake Rogers that allowed Vinnie Pasquantino to score.

Olson (0-5) left the game with a right hip contusion after throwing 2 2/3 innings, allowing two runs on five hits with one walk and two strikeouts.

Perez’s solo homer in the sixth inning sparked a five-hit, six-run rally for the Royals, who built an 8-1 lead. Wacha (4-4) pitched seven innings, allowing two runs on six hits while walking one and striking out three.

Kerry Carpenter hit a solo homer for the Tigers in the fourth inning and added a double in the seventh, scoring on Colt Keith’s two-out double. Keith had three of Detroit’s seven hits.

The Tigers have scored just 20 runs in Olson’s eight starts this season.
