Highly-regarded three-star Bunkie native, cornerback, revealed his commitment to play for Head Coach Willie Fritz and the Houston Cougars on various social media platforms, surprising many experts.
Despite receiving several predictions to join Jeff Lebby and his coaching staff in Starkville, the 5’11” 165-pound player has chosen to join Houston, becoming the 18th commitment in their 2025 recruiting class. Johnson’s decision also contributes to the success of the “Bayou2BayoUH” recruiting initiative, as he is the fourth Louisiana native to commit to the Cougars.
The standout player from Bunkie had offers from Houston, Baylor, Mississippi State, Louisiana, and others, but he only took two official visits.
His initial visit to Starkville was so enjoyable that he almost immediately committed to the Bulldogs, but ultimately opted to consider Houston instead.
While he didn’t anticipate a change of heart during the visit, it potentially became a pivotal moment in his recruitment.
“Once I got there, the coaches and the players and everyone else involved in the staff just made me feel at home,” he said. “They made me feel like I could go to the next level there even if I didn’t go to the SEC.”
Conference alignment was significant for Johnson, and Jeff Lebby emphasized this during recruiting. Johnson is the type of player who would have been beyond Houston’s reach before their move to the Big 12, highlighting the impact of this transition.
When asked what Houston fans can anticipate from him, Kyle mentioned, “I have exceptional ball skills, I’m quick, and agile, with a lot of speed.”
