JUST IN: Texas Tech football lands speedy transfer WR from Houston

Mikal Harrison-Pilot, a speedy wide receiver transfer from Houston, has verbally committed to the Texas Tech Red Raiders.

The Texas Tech football program is enhancing its speed by welcoming Mikal Harrison-Pilot, a transfer from Houston. After his visit to Lubbock was discussed on Wednesday, the swift wide receiver, who debuted with the Houston Cougars last season, confirmed his commitment to the Red Raiders on Thursday via social media.

While this addition may not yield immediate benefits for Texas Tech, it has the potential for significant long-term impact. Despite not recording any stats in four games with the Cougars last season, mainly contributing on special teams, Harrison-Pilot will enter the 2024 season as a redshirt freshman, offering four years of eligibility to play for the Red Raiders.

Mikal Harrison-Pilot, a highly touted wide receiver prospect from Temple, Texas, has transferred from Houston to Texas Tech. Despite not recording any stats in his limited playing time as a true freshman with the Cougars last season, Harrison-Pilot’s potential is evident. As a high school standout, Harrison-Pilot was rated a four-star recruit by 247Sports, ranked as the No. 135 overall player in the nation and No. 25 in the state of Texas.

He had numerous offers from top programs, including Texas, TCU, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Baylor, and others. At 5-foot-11 and 195 pounds, Harrison-Pilot projects as a slot receiver for the Red Raiders. With his blazing speed, he could potentially contribute as a kickoff returner, though Texas Tech already has a dangerous option in senior Drae McCray.

While Harrison-Pilot may not make an immediate impact in 2024, his arrival in Lubbock could pay dividends in the coming years. With McCray’s eligibility expiring after this season and the departure of transfer receiver Josh Kelly, Harrison-Pilot may have an opportunity to step into a larger role in 2025 and beyond. Texas Tech head coach Joey McGuire has emphasized the importance of speed in his program, and Harrison-Pilot’s athleticism aligns with that vision.

As a standout sprinter in high school, recording times of 11.02 seconds in the 100-meter dash and 21.63 seconds in the 200-meter dash, Harrison-Pilot’s speed is undeniable. Despite the potential for a delayed impact, the addition of Harrison-Pilot to the Texas Tech roster is an exciting prospect for the Red Raiders’ future. His combination of talent, speed, and versatility could make him a valuable asset as the program continues to build towards success in the Big 12 Conference.
