It appears that implementing a new scheme for the first time in many years can significantly benefit an offense and its star quarterback.
Take the New Orleans Saints and quarterback Derek Carr, under the guidance of new offensive coordinator Klint Kubiak, for example.
Carr delivered an impressive performance, completing 19 of 23 passes for 200 yards and three touchdowns in a commanding 47-10 victory over the Carolina Panthers, starting the season with a win and putting an end to the summer hype surrounding Spencer Rattler.
Before anyone dismisses it by saying it’s just the Panthers, the statistics reveal something noteworthy.
Kubiak has a strong penchant for utilizing motion—lots of it.
Ian Hartitz from Fantasy Life noted that the Saints increased their pre-snap motions and shifts by an astounding 38 percent compared to last year’s season opener, the highest increase in the league. Additionally, Pro Football Focus’ Gordon McGuinness pointed out that the Saints employed play action on 40 percent of Carr’s dropbacks, a significant rise from last year’s 15 percent.
This represents a stark contrast to the previous season under Pete Carmichael’s offensive leadership.
Of course, other teams will analyze this footage and look to adapt, but these new strategies, along with their flexibility and matchup potential, suggest that the Saints could maintain this level of performance against all opponents, not just those at the bottom of the draft rankings.
