Peter Handyside, who led Stoke City to promotion from Division Two in 2002, has passed away at 49.

The central defender was highly esteemed at Grimsby Town and joined Stoke in 2001 when the club was struggling in the third tier. He was 27 at the time and made history by being one of just two players in recent times to captain the club on his first appearance.

Handyside showcased his skill alongside Sergei Shtaniuk, Clive Clarke, and Wayne Thomas under the guidance of Gudjon Thordarson as Stoke secured promotion through an intense playoff campaign and a memorable comeback victory against Cardiff City. He continued to play a crucial role as Stoke retained their status in the following season, managed by Tony Pulis, by securing safety with a win over Reading on the final day.

After his time at Stoke City, he continued his career at Barnsley and played for non-league teams such as Northwich Victoria. Following retirement, he worked as a furniture delivery driver in Hartshill before relocating to Dumfries, his hometown. It is reported that he passed away yesterday.

The news of his death has deeply saddened fans from his former clubs.

Stoke City issued a statement expressing their condolences: “Our heartfelt thoughts go out to Peter’s family and friends during this challenging time. In a gesture of remembrance, the players and staff of Stoke City will wear black armbands in today’s match against Blackburn Rovers.

Before their League Two match against Stockport County, Grimsby Town will observe a minute’s applause.

A statement released by Grimsby expressed their sorrow: “The entire football club is devastated by the unexpected passing of former player Peter Handyside. Our condolences are with Peter’s family during this difficult period. Once a Mariner, always a Mariner.”

Tributes have also poured in from Stoke City supporters.

Angela Smith, a devoted fan who will provide commentary for Radio Stoke during the Blackburn game, shared her sentiments: “It’s truly heartbreaking to hear about the loss of a former Stoke captain. Many fans will recall him for leading us to victory in the promotion match against Brentford and for his role in maintaining our standing in the league the following season. He was a remarkable captain, and my thoughts are with his loved ones at this time.”
