Southern Miss football hire Western Kentucky’s as coach
Micheal Spurlock has been appointed to lead the group, according to a report from 247Sports on Wednesday night. He served as the wide receivers coach at Western Kentucky during the 2023 season.
Originally from Indianola, Mississippi, Spurlock played at Ole Miss, starting as a quarterback before switching to running back. Despite going undrafted, he played in the NFL from 2006 to 2014 with seven different teams.
Spurlock began his coaching career as an assistant at the high school level in 2015. He brings two years of NFL experience as a special teams assistant with the Dallas Cowboys and Green Bay Packers, in addition to various positions in college football, including serving as a senior analyst at Ole Miss in 2020 and 2021.
Currently, Greg Meyer is the running backs coach at Southern Miss and also serves as the special teams coordinator, though it is unclear if he will be retained.
Jordy Joseph, who coached the Golden Eagles’ running backs in 2021 and 2022, has transitioned to quarterbacks coach for 2023. He will be leaving Southern Miss to take on the role of running backs coach at Houston.
Spurlock will take over a running backs group that is starting fresh without Frank Gore Jr., the program’s third all-time leading rusher, who declared for the 2024 NFL Draft in early December. However, the team will be welcoming back Dreke Clark, who was the second-leading rusher last season, along with several young talents expected to step up.
Spurlock will be the third new addition to Southern Miss’ coaching staff, alongside offensive coordinator Chip Long and defensive coordinator Clay Bignell.
There are still two additional coaching positions left to fill at Southern Miss.
