Just In: Saints’ Kellen Moore Provides QB Competition Update

NFL training camps began last week, giving fans their first glimpse at the New Orleans Saints’ quarterback battle.
The Saints have taken a measured approach to the competition. Coming into camp, Tyler Shough and Spencer Rattler were seen as frontrunners, but Jake Haener remains a contender, and the team has made sure to emphasize that. Head coach Kellen Moore stated that the quarterbacks would rotate in and out until a starter is named — and that’s exactly how things have played out.
All three — Rattler, Shough, and Haener — have had reps with the first-team offense. Rattler led off, followed by Shough and then Haener. So far, no clear leader has emerged from camp, although Rattler has received significant praise. Still, each quarterback remains in serious contention for the starting role.
Leading up to camp, the Saints’ quarterback situation drew some criticism due to the group’s youth and lack of NFL experience. However, that hasn’t deterred the team. Moore has expressed confidence in all three players vying for the job.
“We feel good about letting all these guys go for it,” Moore told The Advocate’s Matthew Paras.
Of course, it’s not unusual for a head coach to express faith in his quarterbacks — especially when he played a key role in drafting one of them. Still, Moore’s optimism should provide fans with some reassurance.
Given Moore’s track record of offensive success, whoever wins the starting role will be in capable hands.
