Massive Crisis as Roughriders suffer $1.1M loss following poor 2023 season

The Saskatchewan Roughriders, a community-owned team, attributed their $1.1 million loss in 2023 operations to a challenging on-field performance, as outlined in a “Financial Summary” released on their website.

Following another season where the Roughriders lost their final seven games, ended with a 6-12 record, and missed the playoffs, head coach Craig Dickenson and his coaching staff were let go, impacting attendance numbers at Mosaic Stadium. Traditionally, CFL teams generate 40% of their revenues from ticket sales.

The Roughriders had just one sellout in their 10 home games. The team reported revenues of $35.6 million against expenses of $36.7 million. Despite the operating loss, the Roughriders maintained a positive Earnings Before Interest and Depreciation (EBIDA) of $1.5 million.

Further information will be provided at the club’s upcoming annual general meeting scheduled for June 18 at the Conexus Arts Centre, beginning at 7 p.m. In 2022, the Roughriders saw a profit of $7.2 million, with a significant portion from hosting the Grey Cup in Regina.

Since the CFL’s 2020 season cancellation due to COVID-19, the team has been working to solidify its financial position. The announcement mentioned an increased stabilization fund of $9.6 million and net assets totaling $49 million for the franchise.
