The Boston Red Sox eagerly await the return of their powerful right-handed hitter, Tyler O’Neill, who is recovering from a leg infection. O’Neill’s impressive offensive numbers, including a .544 slugging percentage and 22 home runs in 2024, have been crucial to the Red Sox’s success this season.
However, O’Neill’s future with the team beyond this season remains uncertain. According to a report from Bleacher Report’s Kerry Miller, O’Neill is likely to demand a three-year, $60 million contract in free agency this offseason.
Despite missing time due to various injuries, including a concussion, knee inflammation, and now a leg infection, O’Neill has consistently performed at a high level when healthy. His .900 OPS this season is a significant improvement over his previous two seasons combined (.707) and is more in line with his .912 OPS in 2021, which earned him a Gold Glove and a top 10 finish in the NL MVP voting.
As the Red Sox look to make a push for the Wild Card race, O’Neill’s return to the lineup will be a much-needed boost. For now, contract discussions will have to wait as the team focuses on winning games. However, the Red Sox’s chief baseball officer, Craig Breslow, will likely have to open his wallet if he wants to keep O’Neill in Boston beyond this season.
