Just in: Oldham Athletic head coach Micky Mellon announces the departure of another highly-rated midfielder

Oldham Athletic have parted ways on good terms, with Shelton moving on to join Barnet. The midfielder arrived at Latics in January 2023 and played in 35 league games, but only featured twice under manager Micky Mellon. Shelton, 27 years old, has been out of action since November of the previous year.

It is understood that Shelton expressed his desire to leave Oldham and explore other playing opportunities during the latter part of the season, and now an agreement has been reached between him and the club. In a statement, the club thanked Shelton for his efforts over the past two seasons and wished him well for the future.

Shelton, who came to Oldham from Hartlepool United where he had a successful spell with over 100 appearances and aided in their promotion to the Football League in 2021, expressed his happiness at joining Barnet.

He highlighted the manager’s enthusiasm as a key factor in his decision to move to the club and expressed his eagerness to contribute to Barnet’s goal of returning to the Football League.

Barnet manager Dean Brennan spoke highly of Shelton, whom he tried to sign multiple times last season. Brennan praised Shelton’s experience, character, and attributes, believing that he will strengthen the team’s midfield.

Shelton had signed a two-and-a-half-year deal with Oldham, scoring two goals in his 35 appearances, but fell out of favor with manager Mellon within a year of his transfer from Hartlepool United.
