JUST IN: New York Rangers top player out 2-3 weeks with lower-body injury

A significant setback for the captain of the Rangers.

Following the NHL Trade Deadline on Friday, New York Rangers’ GM Chris Drury announced that captain Jacob Trouba will be sidelined for the next 2-3 weeks due to a lower-body injury.

During his interaction with the press, Drury mentioned that the team currently has no intention of placing the 30-year-old defenseman on the injured reserve list.

The exact timing and nature of Trouba’s injury are still unclear.

Despite experiencing significant time off during the 2020-21 season, Trouba has maintained good health over the last two years. He participated in 81 games in the 2021-22 season and didn’t miss a single game last year. Trouba did miss two games around the All-Star break due to a suspension for elbowing Pavel Dorofeyev of the Vegas Golden Knights.

In the current season, Trouba has registered three goals and 19 assists in 60 games and is on track to surpass the 30-point milestone he achieved last season

In his 739-game career, hailing from Rochester, Michigan, Trouba has scored 73 goals and provided 236 assists, with 12 points accumulated in 57 playoff appearances. He is currently in the fifth year of a seven-year contract he inked with the Rangers back in July 2019, which carries an average annual value (AAV) of $8 million.

Just before the trade deadline last Friday, the Rangers brought in defenseman Chad Ruhwedel from the Pittsburgh Penguins in exchange for a 2027 fourth-round draft pick. Head coach Peter Laviolette clarified that this acquisition was not a spur-of-the-moment decision following Trouba’s absence from the last two practices.

Drury and the Rangers were notably active during this trade deadline period, securing Alex Wennberg, Jack Roslovic, and Nic Petan. Their primary objective was to bolster the team’s depth as they aim for a successful playoff run.

Currently holding a 40-14-4 record, the Rangers remain atop the Metropolitan Division, leading the second-place Carolina Hurricanes by four points.
