JJ McCarthy: Patriots Surprised with Unconventional Pick in Recent 2024 NFL Mock Draft

“How will the New England Patriots return to success?

According to NFL Network’s Bucky Brooks’ most recent 2024 NFL mock draft, the New England Patriots are poised to rebuild their team around a quarterback, and it’s not the one you might expect. Brooks predicts that Jerod Mayo and his team will choose Michigan quarterback JJ McCarthy with the third overall pick in the upcoming NFL Draft.

“Given Tom Brady’s achievements with the Patriots, selecting McCarthy, who is regarded as the best quarterback in Michigan’s history, could be the strategic move for Eliot Wolf. Despite McCarthy’s limited experience as a passer, his athleticism, leadership qualities, and track record of winning could align well with Jerod Mayo’s vision for a starting quarterback.

New England Patriots Outlook Shifts Toward the Future Under the Leadership of Jerod Mayo.

hortly after a notable departure from the position of head coach for the New York Jets, famously documented on a napkin, Bill Belichick made the transition to become the head coach of the New England Patriots in 2000. This move followed his moderately successful 36-44 coaching stint with the Cleveland Browns from 1991 to 1995, as well as serving as an assistant for the Patriots and Jets from 1996 until his appointment in 2000. After a 5-11 debut season in Foxborough, Belichick steered the team to success, notably with Tom Brady taking over for Drew Bledsoe after the latter’s injury in week 2 of the 2001 season.

Even with Bledsoe, who had recently signed the then-largest contract in NFL history, Belichick chose to continue with the promising Brady, a player drafted 199th overall just months earlier. The Patriots then went on to defeat the Kurt Warner-led St. Louis Rams, known as ‘The Greatest Show on Turf,’ clinching the franchise’s first Super Bowl victory. Belichick and Brady would later achieve six Super Bowl wins together before Brady left for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers after the 2019 season.

Brady added another Super Bowl victory to his record in Tampa Bay, making it his seventh, while Belichick faced the challenge of replacing one of the greatest players in the history of the sport. The Patriots have been grappling with this issue, evidenced by their 4-13 record last season, resulting in them acquiring the 3rd pick in the upcoming April NFL Draft. Notably, Belichick will no longer be coaching the team, with Jerod Mayo taking over coaching duties in Foxborough.
