General manager Nico Harrison was rewarded on Tuesday with a multi-year contract extension by the Dallas Mavericks, who will advance to the NBA Finals. The specifics of the contract were not disclosed.
Harrison was the head coach of a club that finished outside the playoffs in 2022–2023 but will play the Boston Celtics starting on Thursday in an attempt to capture its first NBA championship since 2011.
Owner Patrick Dumont of the Dallas Mavericks said in a statement, “Nico Harrison has demonstrated his leadership capabilities in the Dallas Mavericks organization.” “His leadership, in addition to his work for our staff and players, has helped our club reach the NBA Finals this year and make two postseason appearances in three seasons. We are thrilled to watch him continue to build on the groundwork he has helped lay, and we are honored to have him on our team for the long run.”
In the offseason, Harrison signed Derrick Jones Jr., negotiated a 2023 post-draft trade for Dereck Lively II, and made trades for Daniel Gafford and PJ Washington. For superstar Kyrie Irving and Luka Doncic, all four have been essential members of the supporting cast. Doncic was also given a supermax extension by him.
Since Harrison, 51, took over, the Mavericks are 140-106, including 50-32 this season. In the Western Conference, they were ranked as the fifth seed.
Amidst rumors that coach Jason Kidd was connected to the Los Angeles Lakers coaching position, Dallas hired him to a multi-year contract last month.
